I keep remembering one of my guru's teachings about happiness. She says that people, universally, tend to think of happiness as fluke, a condition they might just fall for without a town crier, like good weather. But happiness doesn't work that way. It is the consequence of personal effort. We fight, we struggle to find him, we hunt him down, and sometimes even to the ends of the earth. Everyone must be active in order to bring about the manifestations of his grace. And once we reach this state of happiness, we must make it last without ever giving in to neglect, we must provide a tremendous effort and swim relentlessly in this happiness, always higher, to float on its crests. Otherwise this contentment will escape you, drop by drop.
